![]() ![]() To start with, basically everything that Mother sings is in 3/4 time. In light of the criticism leveled against it, I was curious then to see if there was any depth to the musical structure of this show that I know and love so well. For you see, the reality is that many critics over the years have accused Ragtime of being all spectacle and no substance (the very grandiose nature of the prologue could perhaps be considered proof of this). ![]() The incredible scope of Ragtime accounts for both its great appeal and possibly it’s greatest flaw. And there is a lot of plot that needs to be covered before the curtain falls. Thaw as well as three separate ensembles. Morgan, Henry Ford, Emma Goldman, Evelyn Nesbitt, Stanford White, and Harry K. Washington, Tateh, the Little Girl, Harry Houdini, J. In the opening number alone, we are introduced to the Little Boy, Father, Mother, Younger Brother, Grandfather, Coalhouse, Sarah, Booker T. If you’ve read the book or perhaps seen the musical Ragtime and especially if you were lucky enough to see one of the Broadway productions, you’ll know that this is a story of EPIC proportions. (If you're having a hard time keeping the characters straight I would recommend quickly taking a look at the plot synopsis before going any further.) When you think about it, the sheer scope of the novel is somewhat incredible. It is no small task to relate the narratives of three such different characters as Mother, Tateh, and Coalhouse Walker, Jr. But how can we account for the great popularity of both novel and show? Well, the truly brilliant thing about Ragtime is how it handles all these intersecting storylines. I think about that story a lot when I listen to the music of Ragtime – how a brick wall and a case of writer’s block led to a novel that has resonated so deeply with thousands of readers. And Ragtime the novel eventually became Ragtime the musical. Washington? Doctorow’s errant speculations eventually became the novel Ragtime. Who would they have been? In an age of great racial divides, how would they have interacted with the world around them? Could they, by chance, have crossed paths with any of the famous figures of that age? Men like J. And then Doctorow began to wonder about the family that would have lived in this house all the way back in 1902 when it was first built. This led him to think about the house itself. For lack of something better to write about, he began to describe the exposed brick wall in front of him. Apparently, he was sitting in his home in New Rochelle, suffering from a particularly bad case of writer’s block (a feeling that happens to resonate very strongly with me in this particular moment as it has taken me quite a while to begin this particular article, but I digress). The author was leading a discussion about his work, and when asked about Ragtime he began to explain how the novel was born. When I was younger, I had the opportunity to meet E. ![]()

Even though we see so little of what happens with the equinoxes and solstices, it’s amazing what happens outside of our own planet. Of course, in the cities, we can’t see them all that well, but we can go to the country and look at the stars. These constellations include Cancer, the crab, Leo, the lion, Ursa Major and Ursa minor, Big bear and Little bear/cub, and Virgo, the maiden, are some of the most well-known constellations that will be showing up. If you aren’t as much a daylight person and more of a nighttime person, there’s something good for the nighttime people as well! When the Earth begins to tilt +23.5 degrees for the Northern Hemisphere, our view of constellations gets a switch up! The Spring Constellations, which are visible from late March to late June in the Northern Hemisphere, make their yearly spring debut. With the bringing of the Spring Equinox, the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere tilts towards the Sun at a positive 23.5 degrees and the same happens with the Autumnal Equinox but with the Southern Hemisphere. But, how do these things occur? The Earth is constantly moving, whether we know it or not, and Earth is also on a tilt of about 23.5 degrees, which, in some way, is pointed towards the Sun. Why does this occur? Well, the Sun sits parallel to the celestial equator, or an imaginary line just above the equator, which, as time passes through the day, when it gets to noon, the sun is directly above our heads, or a true noon.Īnother effect is the nearly equal day and night that occurs, which occurs for the same reason that the Earth gets the Sun at due east, true noon, and due west. Such as, the fact that the Sun rises due east and sets due west. Now, that’s what we know about here on earth, but what happens out there, in space? Well, a lot, actually, which also includes the Earth.ĭuring the spring equinox, some interesting things happen with the Sun when it comes to Earth, something that may be noticeable or not noticeable at all. Plants start sprouting, the winds become less biting, and the sun rises earlier and sets later. With the spring equinox comes, for the Northern Hemisphere, our daylight hours and the temperature increase, and from what we’ve seen, it starts raining. On March 20, 2021, the Spring Equinox occurred, marking the official start of the season, even if we aren’t out of snow possibilities yet. "Snow-White" is filled with surreal imagery. “In fact, they were inspirational to the Surrealists.” “The Fleischer Studios had a really experimental and kind of Surrealist style,” says Hendershot. Halfway through the film, jazz legend Cab Calloway (a regular guest in Betty Boop cartoons) performs a spooky musical number, embodied first by Koko and then by a ghost. As Max’s grandson Mark Fleischer recalls, his grandfather’s motto was “If you can do it in real life, why animate?” Fleischer Studio’s seven-minute “Snow-White” short includes such surreal images as the evil queen’s face morphing into eggs in a frying pan a tree stump fighting with Betty’s co-stars, canine beau Bimbo and his friend Koko the Clown and Betty, interred in an ice block coffin, being led down a mountain by the dwarfs on skis. In the Fleischer landscape, anything was possible, and seemingly nothing was off limits. In New York, meanwhile, Fleischer created a grungy, often dangerous urban world for its characters to navigate. From its home in California, Disney was laying the groundwork for the idyllic, fantastical fairy tales that would soon dominate its oeuvre. The dueling studios’ styles were diametrically opposed. Betty’s appearance continues to evolve today, with the character donning ripped jeans, joggers and sneakers, and overalls in merchandise and on social media. Beneath that iconic look, however, is a more complex story of aesthetic transformation, from what Heather Hendershot, a media historian at MIT, describes as a “flapper-secretary-adventurer” in the early 1930s to a “middle-class homemaker” by the end of the decade. The enduring image of Betty is a flapper in a strapless minidress, with a garter peeking out above her knee and large hoop earrings in her ears. … They would come for the Betty Boop cartoon.” “She’s a big hit,” says Katia Perea, a cartoon scholar at City University New York, “and she’s a big hit in the same way that Felix the Cat is a big hit, where she was drawing audiences to the movie.
